4 Stars Well worth the money. Don’t think, buy it.
Now let me say first and foremost that I am NOT a professional photographer by any means, but I am a decent amateur photographer and read up on this lens for months before I pulled the trigger and bought it. My only regret…I wished I would have done it sooner so that I could have enjoyed it longer. :) The reviews on this site were extremely helpful along with the images people have uploaded taken with the lens. After reading this lens review [...] and the ones here, here is my own. I own the Canon Rebel XSI.

Cons:

* No IS (Image Stabilization). At first I thought this would be a problem but it’s really not. What it does do is make you really take your time and make you a better photographer. I do wish it came with it for that “just in case” moment but the lens is sharp enough and heavy enough you can overcome this very MINOR thing.

*A “tad” noisy. Yes it can be a bit noisy but it’s not as bad as what I had read on a few reviews. Very minor but compared to my 18-55 kit lens I did notice it but it’s not enough to take away from the image quality of this lens.

*Focus can “hunt” sometimes. But it’s a very rare thing I have seen in the 200+ images I’ve taken so far with the lens. Out of all of those images it’s done it to me twice. That’s it.

Pros: Everything else.

The “cons” i noted above are more of a hey you need to know type of thing but they are NOT enough for you to not think about buying this lens. I have used it in low light, sports shots with my daughter at soccer, nature shots, sunsets, sunrises and they have all turned out just fine. Would I have liked to own the 24-70L lens? Sure. But at 1350 vs. $381. Not even a 2nd thought.

Read the reviews on here, read the SLRGEAR review and then buy this lens.

4 Stars Great, but not perfect.
I bought this lens for low-light work, but it almost doesn’t disappoint. The copy I received is sharp, but it still does a little hunting in low light situations where I felt there was enough light. The build quality is good, but not weather sealed like the Canon L-series. The zoom ring is nice and tight where I really don’t need the zoom lock so I sometime forget to set it with no worries. Overall a great lens. I am very pleased with it.

5 Stars Sharp sturdy lens
I got this lens to expand my range from the canon 50mm 1.8 MK1. It’s big, heavy, and as sharp as the 50mm. I really can’t tell the difference between this lens at 2.8 and the 50mm at 5.6. I use a old 300d with the the crop sensor, so if there are problems on the edges, I’m missing them all. Good color, good depth. It hunts for focus here and there, but it’s not really a problem unless the light is real dim. I’m impressed. Once you get used to the extra weight, you don’t notice it. I just use the 50mm 1.8 if i’m shooting at night by lamp light.

5 Stars Excellent general purpose lens
I’ve been using this lens for two and a half years now on my Rebel XT. I love it. About 90% of my photos are taken with it. The image quality is excellent, the focus is reliable, and it weighs half of what the Canon 24-70L does (and is a third the price!). I recommend this lens enthusiastically to everyone with a DSLR asking for a good general purpose lens. It’s a great deal.

5 Stars Wow!
This is a spectacular lens. When I compare it to my 24-70 “L” Canon lens the Tamron is every bit the equivalent at the same aperture; only, it is 1/3 the price and lighter. Yes, the focal range is a bit different than the Canon and the lens body is plastic(actually polycarbonate–which can be stronger than metal), but for 1/3 the price I can drop it, replace it and still come out $400 ahead compared to the Canon(I sold the Canon after I bought this lens because I no longer used it.)

5 Stars Great buy: cheapest on Amazon
I was at the Best Buy ready to purchase this kit. Thankfully, I figured out that it was about $30.00 cheaper through Amazon. I am very happy with the kit. It holds A LOT. So if you are looking to store your extra lenses, etc….this is a great kit. I highly recommend it.

3 Stars Good deal, but bag is bulky
This is a great deal. The battery alone can be expensive, but when bundled with a big bag and a Canon UV filter, this doesn’t come out to that bad of a price, even if it may seem expensive at first.

The spare battery is very convenient to have, especially if you hope to travel with your camera.

The UV filter is good, no complaints there.

The bag is very good in that it can hold many lenses and accessories … recently on a vacation I was able to fit my camcorder in the bag in addition to my DSLR and two lenses … but it is a bit bulky for everyday use. You should consider getting a holster bag for when you know you’ll only need one lens.

In conclusion, a great price for the package, but don’t make the mistake I did and think that this bag will be convenient for everyday use. It’s bulky!

5 Stars very happy
Very happy with the this product. The case is just the right size for what I needed. Shipping was great. Product was in perfect condition.

I would puchase again from the seller.

5 Stars xsi
super camera for the beginner price finally came down. I have large hands not made for large hands

still learning all the bells and whistles. get the 28-135 lenses because the 18-55 that comes with it is not the greastest

5 Stars Camera Bag & Accessories
This Is a very Good bag for any Rebel camera. Well constucted, with plenty of space. I have my Canon Rebel t1i camera, 570 flash, 55-250mm lens, 17-55mm lens, extra batteries, filters, memory cards, and my Canon Powershot camera in this bag and still have room for more. Good padding around the outside and inside to protect it all. A very good bargain with the accessories you get with it.

Precision Design DSLR300 Universal High Power Auto Flash with Zoom Bounce Swivel Head for Canon Rebel XT XTi XS XSi EOS 30D 40D 50D 5D SLR Cameras

This universal high-power flash unit for Canon digital SLR cameras is the perfect accessory for any photographer looking for reduced red-eye, evenly lit subjects, or more power for telephoto shooting. This flash can be effective at ranges of over 50 feet, reduces shadows, and adds depth to your pictures thanks to the adjustable head, which zooms, swivels and tilts for added versatility.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Precision Flash
For the price, this flash is fine for simpler projects. The multi directional swivel capability is great. It locks and releases easily onto my Canon 350D. I used it for portrait session and it was cool. When I attempted to move around with it and shoot more spontaneously, the flash reset proved to be rather slow and cause me to miss an important shot — no rapid fire. Make sure to replace batteries often, because the more you use the flash, the slower it resets.

5 Stars Does the job for a Great Price!
This product does a great job. I love that it can do a 360 which is super helpful when I take veritcal photos. The lighting is more equal that way, rather than it being only one direction. Delivery and packaging was fine, everything came in one pc. :) I would recommend this product for starters and plan to order thru this co. again.

5 Stars Good Value Flash
I am an amateur photographer and I love the price and versatility of this flash. Perfect for anyone starting out!

3 Stars My experience with the Precision Design Flash
The flash was a little difficult to use at first. I was in a gym at a volleyball game and the lighting was very dim. I had to adjust the flash several different times to acquire a clear picture – which meant I missed some “Kodak” moments. I am learning how to bounce the light but overall it is a good product.

3 Stars Not as flexible as you might think
I found this flash disappointing. I am not a professional photographer but I am experienced and have owned Cannon SLR’s and done some medium format photography. To the positive it does tilt, swivel and the flash head does have a 4 position zoom shroud. It has an auto sensor that is designed to adjust the power of the flash. It comes with a PC cord which the instructions indicate, “is NOT required for normal use,” (their emphasis.)

As to the negative, the only link in the mount from the flash to the camera, a Canon Rebel XS, is just for the purpose of firing the flash. The instructions direct you to set the camera to manual exposure control, adjust the shutter speed to 1/60th of a second, ISO speed to 200 and the lens aperture to F4. You can pretty well forget action shots at 1/60th. Also, in practice I found that the flash was firing so strong that skin tones seemed bleached. In addition the cycle time of the flash with fresh batteries, based on the manufacturer’s instructions, is 1 – 6 seconds. Again no action shots, certainly you will lose a quick follow-up shot. In practice the cycle time seems just over a second with fully charged batteries.

The flash can be used but only within limited guidelines. The DSLR300 was specified for this model camera and yet is not receiving the data from the camera. The two do not work in harmony together. I don’t mind shooting in manual, in truth I prefer the control. What I don’t like is knowing that the camera and flash are not communicating fully. The flash is holding the performance of the camera back since it can only function in restrictive capacities. You can aim it where you want but after that the camera (and photographer) will be doing the serious work of trying to compensate for the limitations of the flash.

I recognize that this is not an expensive flash and it would not be fare to expect it to perform on the same level as the Canon Speedlite 430EX II. However, when you advertise that it is designed to perform on the Canon platform I expect full functionality. If they advertised the limitations so the consumer can make an informed choice I would not have had an issue.

The Lens Hood is one of the most important accessory you need for each lens you own.A lens hood provides multiple functions: preventing image-degrading lens flare by blocking stray light from striking the surface of the lens, it enables your lens to give you the sharpest photographs with the best contrast and most vivid colors, in inclement weather, it can assist in keeping moisture or wind-blown debris off the lens; and it protects the front barrel from the inevitable impacts against walls, door frames, and other real-life obstacles.

5 Stars Moved me to another level….
This lens is a must for those looking to shoot at another level. It is FANTASTIC!!! Thank you so much for your prompt delivery of the produce. It arrived in excellent condition, just as promised!

2 Stars It’s going back!
I orderd this lens a few days ago and I am not keeping it. Here is my review

Pros:

* Solid build quality

* Fast and quiet autofocus

* Well controlled Barrel Distortion even at 17mm.

Cons:

* After testing this lens for 2 hours. 95% of the pictures were comming out dark with some indoor pictures having dark corners even with my flash on. Picture taken at 2pm on a bright sunny day were dark and colors were dull!!!

*My other L lens EF 70-200 f 4 (from 4 years ago) takes amazing picture compared to this one.

Conclusion

I think this is quality assurance issue. We are in bad economical times and Canon is getting cheap.

Now I have to spend $20 to send it back…I am thinking that I am much better off walking into a store and paying the extra bucks and test the lens before buying it…or get a used one from 4 to 5 years ago. In otherwords treat any lens produced in the last 2 years like a Sigma lens test it before you buy it

5 Stars Incredible Lens
My boyfriend recently purchased the Canon 17-40mm as an awesome gift to me. It is my first “L” lens. I have a Canon Digital Rebel XTi (a 1.6x crop body) so this lens is pretty wide, but not ultra wide. It is a great walk-around lens, and it nicely compliments a crop camera body, though you won’t get the effect of an actual ultra wide. If you want the linear distortion or super panoramas that UWA lenses can deliver, you may want to consider Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM or perhaps the Tokina AT-X116PRDXC AT-X PRO DX 11-16mm. The build quality is incredible, much more durable than my Canon 85mm 1.8 and 28-135mm. I love this lens!

4 Stars Far sharper than the 18-55mm IS lens
I bought this lens recently and have been very happy with it. People who say this lens is not any sharper the Canon 18-55mm IS lens either 1) have a bad copy of the 17-40mm or 2) they got an exceptionally sharp 18-55mm. My 18-55mm IS is sharp, but when comparing photos taken with both lenses, even at f/8, the 17-40mm clearly shows more detail and contrast. It is just MUCH, MUCH sharper. The quality of construction is also exceptional, and after this lens, I might opt for another L lens to replace my Sigma telephoto.

Having said this, however, there are two weaknesses with this lens:

1. No Image Stabilization. In this regard, the 18-55mm IS is superior since you will likely get a lot more non-blurry shots at night when you have to slow down your shutter speed. I myself have no problem with this since I don’t intend to use the 17-40mm at night but rather my Canon SD880IS for wide-angle shots and my Canon 35mm f/2 for shots of people or moving things.

2. The missing 41-55mm focal length. I rarely use this focal length, and since I have a Canon XT, the real focal length of the 17-40 is like 27 to 65, which is more than good enough for me.

So . . . overall, I highly recommend it. But this is NOT a lens that will do everything you need a lens to do. I don’t think such a lens exists, but if it did for a cropped-sensor camera, it would probably be the Canon 17-55 IS. But again, it’s heavier, more expensive, and has a crappier construction. So the 17-40 is the good compromise.

2 Stars Same image quality as kit lens!!!
Reading the reviews, why do you all sound like sales people? What is in it for you if I buy or not??

I have been using my kit lens EF-S 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 IS on my Rebel Xsi. I was looking for a lens that would give my pictures that punch/pop sharpness even when viewed in my LCD.

I decided to try an L series lens…took a bunch of tests various conditions…anylized in PS…NO DIFFERENCE IN SHARPNESS/IMAGE QUALITY! Went back to store and salesman couldn’t explain.

The IS in kit lens actually made it sharper when shooting handheld indoors! The L was blurry.

The construction of L is certainly better, but image quality wise…the same.

Is there a lens that will produce a better quality image than the kit lens?

Prove it. The sample pics posted with each lens do not convince me.

Is there some one else in the same situation who has found the solution?
