Canon EF S 17 85mm f 4 5 6 Image Stabilized USM SLR Lens for EOS Digital SLRs

Canon EF-S 17-85MM f4-5.6 IS USM Lens is possibly the best single lens to own with your Canon Digital Rebel SLR Camera. Equivalent to a 28-135mm lens, this new EF-S lens brings true wide-angle to tele coverage to EOS 20D, 30D, 40D and Digital Rebel shooters. It has Canon’s Image Stabilization system, allowing safe hand-holding at speeds up to three stops slower than otherwise possible. And of course, it’s optically optimized for digital SLRs. A ring-type USM means both fast and silent AF, as well as full-time manual focus when in the AF mode. Circular aperture design — natural highlights, even stopped down two stops Non-rotating front element; lens length does not change during zooming EF-S lens mount — exclusively for EOS 20D and Digital Rebel bodies Filter Size – 67mm Maximum Diameter x Length, Weight – 3.1 x 3.6, 16.8 ounces Only compatible with the 40D, 30D, 20D

5 Stars Great Lens !
This lens is a great lens not only because it is extremely versatile in its range going from a wide angle to a telephoto but also because I found the quality of the pictures that I got from it to be excellent. The Image Stabilizer is a good tool to have in situations where there is not a lot of light. You can drop your shutter speed down, have enough light for a good exposure, and not have an out of focus picture. I would highly recommend this lens. I have a 70-200 L series Canon lens that I am very happy with because of it’s high optic quality, but I have no problem at all, and all the confidence in the world using this “S” series lens in any situation that I feel to be appropriate at the time.
1 Star After 40 Years In Photography: My First Canon Failure
As a professional photographer and decades-long Canon camera and Canon lens consumer/enthusiast, this over-priced boondoggle fails on many counts.
My specialties include producing the Driving & Discovering Hawaii photo guidebooks that contain lots of landscapes and seascapes. There is lens barreling at the wider angles that is so bad I thought something was wrong with my particular lens, but come to find out, they’re all like this.
At wide angle settings you can forget about having a straight/level horizon, and the wider the setting the more preposterous this aberration becomes. Worst of all, this is a CANON lens, and a high-priced one at that, so it amazes me that this company would actually produce a lens of such abysmal quality.
In the old 35mm SLR days, photo magazines would scream blue-bloody murder if they uncovered problems like these in lenses of that period. Cheap, off-brand lenses of the day were vilified for problems not as bad as what we now have here in this present day Canon “premium-class” lens.
Also a big problem at wide angle is STRONG green/magenta fringing along the edges of objects, even at 24mm, which worsens as you go wider. There is a software “fix” for this fringing, but it should not even be present to begin with. To have to use software to fix an aberration in an expensive piece of equipment from a top-rated company is insulting the consumer, and should be a major embarrassment for Canon…but the folks at Canon seem unfazed.
I purchased this lens to give me an all-around tool for shooting many different kinds of travel-related photos, but it fails miserably for me and my particular needs, as I use wide angle for 75% of my shots.
ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS since this review was written: While in the middle of shooting a wedding with this nightmare lens, my Canon xti froze up and flashed me an Error 99 message. Via forums, I found that an error 99 usually signals a problem with the gold contacts in the lens, and I cleaned them diligently, but the problem persists. I also use a Canon EFS 70-300 mm and a Canon macro EFS 60mm, and the xti works fine with both of them.
Do as much research online as you can before considering purchasing this lens.
3 Stars Good features, not so great performance
This is a good lens, but not great. The construction and build quality are solid, and the lens feels heavy and sturdy. It has a useful range of 17-85 as well as IS and USM which makes for ideal “walkaround” lens. However, it is not very fast (4-5.6) which limits indoor, lowlight usage. IS certainly effective and useful and will help for lowlight photography, but not for stopping action.
Ultimately though, a lens is only as good as the photos it produces. Unfortunately, this lens (or perhaps my copy of it?) disappoints in that area. Comparing shots, the kit 17-55mm IS lens actually took sharper photos than this! I still have this lens with me, but more often than not I have been disappointed with the sharpness, especially in my landscape shots (even at higher f/8-10). Barrel distortion is also fairly obvious, even to the untrained eye. Buildings, towers and other tall structures will look concaved. This is less prevalent for smaller, shorter objects, but nonetheless there. Vignetting is not present in most cases, though it can creep in at the wide end with the addition of a polarizing filter.
3 Stars Not a bad lens but there are probably better buys out there
This lens was one of the first lenses I bought and, more than anything, has taught me the value of extensively researching any lenses I buy. I bought this lens because it was a Canon and not because it was a great lens. If I had the opportunity to buy this again, I would definitely consider a different lens.
The good:
- This lens has a fairly respectable range (17-85mm)
- The construction feels solid
- USM is nice
- IS helps
The bad:
- The lens isn’t particularly sharp. I usually use this lens for every day shots or when I can only bring one lens with me and I am indoors. Other than that, I use other lenses even when they are less convenient due to their range because of their sharpness.
- There is no zoom lock. When moving the camera in between shots, the zoom frequently changes. Other lenses in this price range have the ability to lock the zoom at least to some extent.
- The IS isn’t enough to compensate for the f/5.6 at 85mm. It helps, but I would much rather have a faster lens.
I’ve borrowed a Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR DI-II LD Aspherical from time to time and, while it has less range, it is sharper and faster. If you don’t need the whole range of this lens, I’d definitely consider the Tamron.
3 Stars Mechanical problems with 17-85mm
The lens was bought in July, 2008. I have used the lens as my primary lens since I got it. Overall I’m more than pleased with the picture quality that the lens provides. This review however is about construction quality.
On a family mountain hiking trip I shot some pictures to document our successful hike. I used the zoom as normal and shot the pictures I wanted. When the kids had been refueled we started to run down the hiking path with the camera securely placed in my backpack. Naturally the decline was of the bumpy sort, but still I was quite disturbed when (at night) the zoom was no longer working. It was fixed on 17 mm and did not move.
If I had put my lens through some serious direct blows I could have understood why the zoom didn’t work anymore. But laying still in my backpack and suddenly malfunctioning is not good.
Unfortunately I bought it at Amazon and not in my home country, Norway. Having bought it in Norway the repair wouldn’t have cost me a dime. Now, 14 months after purchase I have to pay the equivalent of $180.
If the construction quality of my lens represents the general construction quality of the 17-85mm IS lens, I would NOT recommend bying it.

3 Stars Be Careful! WARNING
This is a wonderful grip – works real well and enhances the usability of the camera.
Mine was DOA, but experimentation showed that somehow the Li-battery tray was faulty as the AA tray worked fine.
As 47th Street won’t pay return postage, I was determined to see if I could fix it, rather than pay and wait.
***WARNING***
(Photo in product image section at the top of the product page)
The soldering and placement of the circuit strips inside the tray is VERY poor. On mine, the positive and negative circuit strips were actually TOUCHING, shorting the batteries, potentially leading to equipment damage, or maybe even a fire. One bump and your camera could be toast.
I would recommend opening the tray (seven easy, but tiny screws) and checking, just in case. I slotted in some small pieces of electrical insulating tape between the strips to keep them apart. Don’t worry, there is nothing in there that is easy to damage.
Apart from that, its great!
5 Stars Great Grip.. ! Good Bundle….
I must say that I was a bit skeptical on choosing the Opteka one, compared to the original CANON Grip, since I already owned one (at my REBEL XT)..
After a little bit of review searches over the internet, a lot of people saying that it was basically the same thing, without the CANON brand…
I got the Opteka grip and I am really satisfied with it. Price is good and it comes with 2 good bateries with it.
Hard to beat…
My only comment would go to the finish of the product, the rubber grip is acctually not properly fitted to the grip (as per photos which I added up to this review), to which I had to use SUPER Glue Gel to get it fully bonded to the grip, only a minor detail thing that could be a drawback only to someone looking for 101% perfection, but, the CANON one which I own did not have this issue, which I believe is mainly because of the material used.
Sure, I must also say that the rubber on the grip is actually REAL RUBBER ! Therefore, gives you a GREAT GRIP! Even better then the CANON one, which mimics the Rubber grip with some plastic Rugged feel.
Overall… I say ! Give it a 10..
No need to purchase the Canon one and pay twice as much !
This will definatelly be a perfect match, as I do not see me using just the camera without the grip.
Oh! And another thing I must say is how the Camera + Grip are quite lighter than my previous Rebel XT Bundle.
Go for it.
5 Stars Great Canon XSI Combo!
This product is a no-brainer on a lot of fronts. Using on a Rebel XSI. Price is fantastic. Quality is high. Comes with two batteries that work in tandem to give you a huge power reserve over a single battery. And, if you are using a large and/or heavy lens like the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS it gives you a welcome extra part of the camera body to hold onto for a great feeling of extra security. Just buy it — you’ll love it.
5 Stars great addition to a Canon Rebel series
super long battery life with this thing. Opteka uses the same molds as the Canon grips, so form factor is indentical. Quality may be a little less than Canon, but considering you are paying half of what Canon charges, I can take the hit in quality. everything works great as it should. In addition to getting it a lot cheaper than the Canon brand, you also get two high capacity batteries.
4 Stars You want to make that XSi feel like the real deal? Buy this!
Okay let me start by saying I was sure this review would not be a pretty one. I purchased my item and selected the 2 day air shipping option. I didn’t get it till 7 days later and I wasn’t very happy about it. I called 47th St. and they advised they ran out of the item and they would be sending it as soon as it arrived. Well they did send it 5 days after I ordered it. What can I say, life is as life is and I feel confident that keeping track of whats on hand versus whats not isn’t an exact science so I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. On to the item.
I affixed this puppy to my XSi and let me tell you it makes it feel like a 5D in my hands. I love not having to change the way I prefer to hold the camera when I go for a vertical shot, not to mention being able to adjust my focal point and aperture/shutter speed values at the same time. I have yet to get a full burn out of the batteries and probably never will since I refuse to do weddings. I do know through simple math that with the two batteries in the bay I will be able to get more than double the life that I currently get out of my old Canon battery which wasn’t as powerful as the two that came with this bad boy. Lastly, I hated the way my lens would pull the camera downward when letting it hang from my next strap and with the added weight of this battery grip that is no longer a problem. The LCD screen rests flush against my body when I let it hang and it feels so much better. This will likely remain the best $80 in photography equipment I will spend on this camera, and I highly recommend it to anybody in debate. Just be willing to wait a few extra days if there out of stock. The customer service was pleasant on the phone though, contrary to other reviews. Thanks 47th St. crew!
Oh yeah, I gave this product a 4 cause the adjustment knob does not feel as solid as the one on my XSi. I feel confident that it will after a little breaking in though.

5 Stars Better than the first
I have had this camera for about 3 weeks now and I must say I love it. I purchased it to replace my older Canon Rebel 6.1 mp which I also loved and still do. (though its only a still picture camera) Its a great backup. This new Rebel T1i 15.1 mp has many options but what I really like is the HD video camera feature. No more bringing a separate video camera on vacation. This is a perfect all in one camera. I also bought the Canon 18-200 mm zoom lense which truly makes the camera and all in one. Its a little smaller than my old one and a lot lighter. The only thing that might not be 5 star would be the shutter sound. It’s kind of loud but not a turn off in no way. Just have to get used to. Having said that, once I shoot with my old camera (hearing the lack of sound) and then shoot with the new camera (more sound) I am finding myself liking the new sound better. The battery is smaller and lighter and seems to last longer except when using the video mode, then it goes pretty quick. Best to get a backup battery anyway, especially if your going to be taking alot of pictures or video such as on vacation. I also purchased to San Disk Ultra 11 16GB, works great with the video BUT my card reader doesnt work with it. I have to unload the photos/video using the cable. It unloads very fast just a little inconvenient.
5 Stars Canon T1i 15.1 very nice camara
When I was looking at cameras I read that the lens that comes with this camera was not very good. I bought the camera with the lens anyway. I figured that if I didn’t like the lens I could always get a better one. I have had a few days of picture taking in the New Mexico and Arizona areas. This camera and lens are great. The lens takes very sharp pictures from the balloon launch at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta to petroglyphs and close ups of petrified wood. I used my 75-300 zoom lens from my old Canon EOS film camera to shoot wild life at long distance and that lens worked great as well. The camera processes each shot so quickly that it can rapid fire without hesitation. Either the people who did not like the lens are much better at photography than I am or they don’t know what they are talking about.
5 Stars My first DSLR, love it
I used to use point-and-shoot cameras, produced many pictures which most time looks plain. My friend recommanded this one to me. Still learning, but overall very happy with it. Love a lot features. Highly recommanded for beginners like me.
5 Stars this canon 500d is awesome
this is an entry level dslr but the features are comparable to a professional dslr and i’m only using an 18-200 canon lens. how much more if i am using the more expensive ones. I’m a point and shoot camera guy and i never had any problem with the shift to dslr because of the ease in operation of he camera. I did not regret buying this camera.
4 Stars Good product but bad seller!
It’s unbelievable to notice Amazon Customer service is bad! Yet another outsourced service! The rep, had no clue on matching the price-drop!

4 Stars Best thing I’ve bought for $10 in a long time
It does what I was hoping it would do. Range is about 15-18 feet. What more do you want for ten bucks?
5 Stars Opteka Remote for my CANON XSI
This remote is amazing, and it’s easy to set your camera up to use it. I love it… Been taking family photos like Crazy…. And it was a great price, and fast shipping.. What more could I ask for…
2 Stars Good if used on very short distance.
I used it while I was camping. I didn’t have any problem to set it up but i was surprised about how short the distance between the remote and the camera must be to be able to control the shot. And you must be just in front so It took me some acrobatics movement to be able to take some shoots during our fire-camp. Other than that it’s a great little remote, very light but just not what i need.
5 Stars Not as small as the Canon branded remote, but works just as well for less $
The remote works just fine, range as expected. Only downside to choosing this remote over the canon branded one is that the canon one is a lot smaller and will attach to your neck strap. I gave it 5 stars because it is 1/3-1/2 the price of the canon remote.
5 Stars Works great, awesome price
This wireless remote works great. Some people complain about the distance, but the technical details clearly states up to 16ft working distance, which is plenty for my needs. I love this wireless remote and the fact that I am finally in some of my own pictures. I look forward to doing self-portraits. Definitely worth getting.

1 Star amazon misleads you….these are not canon…!!!!!!
I’m wasting my time as they have wasted my time. Yes, if I had read down to the reviews and the lower parts I would have seen what I also encountered. This is MISREPRESENTATION……..I trusted Amazon before, no more, look at the listing:
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSI-58 mm high rez 3 piece filter…..the first damn word says CANON……It should say Canon EOS compatible!!!!!
I’m very upset.
4 Stars Better Bang for your Buck
They arrived before the estimated delivery date. Also i dunno what’s with all the neg comments, these filters are better than what you’re paying for them, even though they’re plastic, they don’t feel that cheap or mess with your shoot.
The half a star off i gave them is for the reflection between the UV filter and the lens showing up in the pic… this is because the lens isn’t antireflection-coated, but I KNEW that, as i photographed directly a lightbulb to test white levels… the other lenses are fine, specially the polarizer one.
3 Stars Not Uniform Size
Filters are great for protecting lenses and for enhancing shots, but I’m probably going to replace these with a different set. They don’t fit well and there is a little bit of optical distortion from them. I haven’t had any issues with the UV filter, but the fluorescent filter does not fit as well as it should and the polarizing filter won’t fit my Canon lens comfortably at all. All polarizing filters are not created equal anyway. I believe this filter is colored in addition to simply polarizing the light.
The filters are ok for the price, but they are not great. The little case that comes with them is nice.
5 Stars Good product
I use these lense filters on my Canon Rebel lenses; they seem to work great!
1 Star Don’t waste your money!
Grabage! Grabage! Garbage! Don’t wast yout money, if you are looking for a better combo, spend more money it will be worth it
